Rubies and gloss

The red lip is not news. Ever since the revival of the Veronica Lake locks and the pinup esthetic, it has been considered a beauty neutral in the fashion crowd. And rightly so. The look is as classic and as necessary as a black stiletto. However, for those who wish to add another dimension to their glamour, red glass lip is a must-try.

A staple of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, Rihanna's red beauty obsession, and now prominently featured on the cover of American Vogue this July, the crimson tide is not only coming on strong; it's going on glossy. At first glance Emma Watson's lips in Vogue seem replaced by some serious rubies. This concoction is the result of careful pigmenting and lacquer, not just a swipe of your go-to lipstick.

This makeup is nothing if not high maintenance. There are very few glosses on the market that can achieve this effect by themselves. The closest I have come is the Chanel ROUGE ALLURE LAQUE no. 75. This product should be treated as a paint, and your lips the picture. It must be layered on, and you need patience and an accurate hand. Touch ups are recommended, so if you are a makeup lover, its perfection. If you are looking for something more durable or want to brave the day with your perfect glassy red mouth, you need a stain and gloss. The best lasting and brightest is Covergirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor no. 507. This product is incredible, waterproof, dayproof and vivid. You just have to reapply the moisture gloss every once in a while to keep up the shine.
